Book Design

After a conversation with Joe, he refered me to designer David Pearson, while his work isn't my usual favoured type of work, I can apriciate his lovely design for book covers.

Alice book covers.

Looking into current and past designs of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland books, specifically the one below by Design Monkey, I love the use of illustrative type that reflects the eclecticism of the book and its story.

I love this design about, I love the use of the simple vector style illustrations and the hand rendered type.

Book design research

Looking into current and past designs specifically for Puffin Books.

These below are redesigns of classics, the use of a large box combined with an illustration is quite a classic format for book cover designs and in this case works will taking nothing away from the illustration while displaying all the nessacary information.

I actually love this Alice design, the illustration is suitably quirky alongside the classic format.

Lazy Oaf

Apparel and accessory company Lazy Oaf work is just lovely, I adore there use of hand-drawn imagery combined with bold colored shapes and patterns in their clothing and prints.

More interesting, seeing their amusing print of the cast of Eastenders, made me think about how to approach my National Portrait Gallery brief, as the brief requires a more light hearted approach towards the image of the gallery and encouraging new visitors.

I really like this almost daft approach to portraits, in this case of characters from the soap.

Kate Bingaman Burt Illustration.

My lovely housemate and partner in Fox Bunting, Brionny, lent me her Handmade Nation book, a lovely book detailing the rise of handmade lead design and crafts throughout time and the factors effecting it such as music, DIY etc.

Inside, the book is filled with lovely illustrations depicting titles, timelines etc.

Brionny pointed me the way of the illustrator responsible for these. Kate Bingaman Burt, whoes site Obsessive Comsumption boasts a lot of illustrations based on her daily purchases as a consumer. I love her style and tongue in cheek approach.
